FAQs for Care Homes - iPad offer
We are no longer accepting applications for a free iPad
Applying for an iPad
Can we still apply for an iPad?
The iPad offer is now closed and we are no longer accepting applications.
When will we find out whether our application has been successful?
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be contacting you to let you know the outcome of your application.
Your new iPad
How will we receive the new iPad?
Over the next few weeks we will contact everyone who is going to get an iPad, and will provide full details about delivery and the next steps.
What will we be able to do with the iPad?
You can use the iPad for video calls and video conferencing and use any of the pre-loaded apps, such as MS Teams and other health and care apps. There will also be links to Digital Social Care (where you’ll find guidance materials) and you’ll get access to technical support and AppleCare.
Are there any restrictions on what we can use the iPad for?
You’ll be able to download other apps you may need, including local health and care apps from a curated app store. You can also use other software and download applications like Capacity Tracker and care planning software. After you receive your iPad, we'll also send you updates about software applications and other tools that are available.
How will the iPads improve the care we provide to our residents?
The iPads can be used to hold video consultations with health and care professionals. You can also use other tools and applications on the iPads to support the care of residents and to access NHSmail. The iPads will also provide secure access to residents’ health information. It’s also important to use the iPads to help people to keep in touch with their loved ones.
Wifi
Do we need our own wifi (wireless internet) before we can use the new iPad?
If your application is successful and you do not have wifi, we’ll include 12 months of free wifi (through a data-enabled SIM card) with each iPad.
IT support
How will you support us to set up and use the iPad?
We’ll provide full guidance on how to set up, use and clean the iPad. You’ll also have access to a range of online guidance materials, as well as software service support.
Security
Will our residents’ data be secure?
Every iPad will be fitted with mobile device management (MDM) software which will be activated for the first 12 months. MDM will help NHSX to manage and track the usage of each iPad (so we can tell if a device has not been turned on - so that we can reach out to the care home to offer more support if needed) and keep the iPad secure.
What can we do about security after 12 months?
The mobile device management (MDM) to keep the device secure is free for the first 12 months. After 12 months your care home can continue to use the MDM software by paying for the MDM contract. If your care home prefers to explore other options, we’ll send details about alternative security arrangements you can use.
How do these iPads fit in with other digital support for care homes?
This offer is one of many ways we’re helping to support care homes to provide care to residents. We’re working to improve the internet and wireless internet connection in care homes and have negotiated a range of connectivity offers to help care home staff and their residents stay connected. We are also, through NHS Digital and care sector colleagues, providing advice and guidance to care providers on how to use technology and digital tools to provide the highest levels of care to care homes.
